PCOS - Prevention And Cure

What Is PCOS?

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a common condition found in women in which benign cysts are found in the ovaries.

How Is PCOS Diagnosed?

If you have at least two of these three symptoms you might be diagnosed with PCOS.

  • Cysts in ovaries impeding release of the ova.
  • Irregular ovulation and irregular periods. Sometimes even non existent.
  • Presence of male hormones in excess causing too much body hair.
  • Decline in fertility and difficulties in getting pregnant.
  • Hirsutism - excessive hair growth in the face, chest, back and buttocks.
  • Weight loss and weakness.
  • Thinning,breaking and shedding hair.
  • Oiliness in the skin.
  • General listlessness and loss of energy.
  • Depression.
What Is The Cause Of PCOS?

The cause of PCOS is as yet unknown but there is reason to believe it may be genetic. It often runs in the family.

PCOS is connected to hormonal imbalance. It not only causes testosterone (male hormone) in your body but also insulin. Insulin controls the sugar content of your body and an excess of it may cause type 2 diabetes later in life.

Is There Any Cure?

There is no known cure for PCOS but the symptoms can be managed.

How Do I Regain My Fertility?

A course of fertility drugs can be tried first. In the event of failure of fertility medication a procedure called Laparoscopic Ovarian Drilling (LOD) will be prescribed. LOD involves using heat or laser rays to destroy the ovarian cysts responsible for the hormonal imbalance.

If you think you might have PCOS do schedule a counselling session with Dr. Nandita Palshetkar, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist extraordinaire in Mumbai or in all the major cities in India.
