A fertilized embryo has an outer shell called Zona Pellucida, also called Zona for short. The embryo, when it is at the blastocyst stage on the fifth or the sixth day needs to break out of the Zona Pellucida. Sometimes the shell or the cyst is too hard or thick for the embryo to break out. Therefore, to assist the hatching process an artificial hole is made into the cyst using laser rays so that the embryo can break out easily. This process is called Laser Assisted Hatching
If you're a healthy woman with normal egg production, healthy fallopian tubes and your partner's sperm cells are sufficiently numerous and motile and you're still unable to conceive it might mean you may be having trouble at the blastocyst stage. In such cases it is worthwhile to explore Laser Assisted Hatching.
There is no evidence of any risk involved in Laser Assisted Hatching to you or your embryo.
Since Laser Assisted Hatching is a new technology the relevant data is not available so it is difficult to quote a success rate with any accuracy.
